Supplementary Nutrition:

All pregnant and lactating women are entitled to free meals and ration support through the Anganwadi system, under the Saksham Anganwadi & POSHAN 2.0 programme. The food basket typically includes fortified rice/wheat, pulses, oil, eggs (as per state policy), jaggery, and seasonal vegetables, aligned to bridge crucial dietary gaps.

Cash Assistance:

• Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY): Rural mothers delivering in public health institutions receive ₹1,400 cash assistance per delivery (inclusive of pre- and post-natal services).
• Tea Garden Women: Pregnant women in tea garden areas are eligible for "Wage Compensation Scheme," which grants ₹15,000 in four instalments to support maternal nutrition and reduce livelihood loss.
• Maternity Benefit (for Construction Workers): Registered construction workers receive ₹20,000 per childbirth (up to two times).
• Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY): Provides a maternity benefit of ₹5,000 for the first live birth (in three instalments, linked to check-ups and child immunization).
• Matri Suraksha Yojana: Newly expanded, offers ₹10,000 to pregnant women from economically weaker sections.

Free Healthcare:

Under the Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK), institutional delivery, C-section, essential drugs, diagnostics, and diet are free for pregnant women in government hospitals. Sick newborns (up to 30 days) receive free treatment, transport, and food.

Anaemia and Micronutrient Support:

Lactating women get iron, folic acid, and calcium supplements, distributed at Village Health & Nutrition Days (VHNDs), and during child immunization visits.

Anganwadi Reach & Coverage:

There are more than 62,000 Anganwadi centres in Assam as of 2025, covering over 3 million beneficiaries (children, pregnant and lactating women). Centers provide a package of six services—including supplementary nutrition, immunization, health check-ups and monitoring, counselling, and preschool education.

Infrastructure Upgrades:

Over 2,300 model Anganwadi centres are newly constructed, with plans for 6,691 more—with improved toilets, kitchens, electricity, and drinking water. Jal Jeevan Mission installed 28,833 water pumps to boost clean water in AWCs as of 2025.

Legal Mandate:

As directed by the Gauhati High Court, every pregnant woman and lactating mother must receive entitled meals free of charge during pregnancy and for six months after childbirth at her local Anganwadi centre.

Awareness Programs:

Regular workshops on pregnancy care, newborn care, breastfeeding, maternal nutrition, infant immunization, menstrual hygiene, and child development.

Referral and Support:

Special focus on timely referral for high-risk pregnancies, postpartum check-ups, and maternal mental health initiatives.

Women's Welfare:

One Stop Centres (OSCs), Sakhi Niwas working women's hostels, Palna creche facilities, and Shakti Sadans are operational for comprehensive women's support and protection in the state.

Vocational and Self-Help:

The government undertakes skills/vocational training for women, especially destitute and single mothers, to promote self-employment and entrepreneurship.

Registration:

Visit your local Anganwadi Centre with an Aadhaar or valid ID. Priority is given to all women in the service area, especially BPL and marginalized groups.

Participation:

Attend monthly health/nutrition days, collect rations (usually bi-monthly), and enrol for cash entitlements as per scheme guidelines.
